Have you ever wanted to save money but have always done a poor job at it? Have you wanted to cook better food but fall back into old patterns? Have you wanted closer relationships but they continue to be distant? Have you wanted to grow your business but never find space to think past the everyday needed tasks?

Lasting change is hard but it can start today!

I have been in each of these places before and I have always encountered the same road block:

I had the energy and motivation to change but one constant struggle was being stuck in old ways of thinking. I needed to retrain my mind!

I was set up for failure before I had ever really began hindered by past habits, fears and failures.

Changing Our Minds

One day in a coaching conversation I was told that to start being someone different I had to start with thinking different. Just think of who or what you want to be and start living like that person or idea.

Hmmm, sounds too simple. But it was free so I tried it!

One example we discussed was that if I wanted to lose weight then I needed to start thinking like a healthier person. If a healthy person went out for lunch and was offered fries or a salad they would often choose a salad. If they had the choice between a soft drink or water they would choose the water. Why? Because that's how healthy people think! They have thought that way for so long that they don't even need to think about it anymore, they just do it. They have trained their minds to think healthy, always.

I was recently looking to lose a few pounds and the idea was simple so I put it into practice.

I was amazed at how often I made a healthy decision!

I still made some bad decisions as my past natural tendencies took over at times but the idea had been planted. I took the test and I knew that I was one step closer towards living out my goals just by thinking different. I still needed continued goal setting, support and healthy accountability but I started with step one and IT GAVE ME HOPE!

This is a change of the mind and it's the first step of working towards success. Thinking successfully begins the journey of successful and long lasting action. Once you start thinking differently only then you can actually start living differently.

Try it!

Try thinking about a change that you want to make, big or small, and start thinking like a person who does that. Here are some examples:

GOAL: Stop drinking alcohol? Think Different: What would a non-drinker do? Where would they go? What would they order?

GOAL: Position myself for a promotion at work. Think Different: How would a next level employee act? What does management do that I can appropriately do right now? How can I better support and celebrate my coworkers/boss today?

GOAL: Save more money? Think Different: If I was a money saver what would I do? Where would I save it? How much would I save each day, or week, or paycheck? What would I stop buying?

It may seem odd at first but believe me, it's one of the greatest things you can do for yourself on your journey towards excellence!
